New strategies against riverblindness

Research Group in Parasitology of the Bonn University are granted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

 

The filariae Onchocerca volvulus is endemic in many countries of Sub-Sahara Africa. More than 40 million people are infected with the causative agent O. volvulus and infection can lead to so called riverblindness with more than 270.000 cases.

The research team of Prof. Dr. Achim Hörauf (University Clinic Bonn) tries to find new therapeutic strategies against the infection and are therefore granted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with 500.000 €.
